Surrealism
Surrealism started as a literary movement, automatic writing, in the late 1910’s and early 20’s. This movement also called automatism wanted to “release the unbridled imagination of the subconscious.” The movement officially started in Paris during 1924 when Andre Breton published Manifesto of Surrealism. Surrealism became intellectual and political movement all about the “private world of the mind, traditionally restricted by reason and societal limitations, to produce surprising, unexpected imagery.” Surrealism poets were caution about starting to work with visual artist but when they did, the artist included Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, André Masson, Joan Miró, Man Ray (“Surrealism”).
Artist:
Vladimir Kush, born in 1965, Russian painter and sculptor. At 17, Kush was drafted into the military and after 6 months he was asked to start making propaganda posters. After the military, he moved on to painting in the streets to support his family in Russia. Finally, his artwork was starting to be noticed and sold in exhibits. His goal was “to reflect the world in the mirror of the metaphor.” The metaphor is also suppose to leave the mind open to find the hidden likeness in the piece (“Artist’s Credo”).

A. As said before, Kush liked to use metaphors. It is said that a metaphor gives full rein to imagination, as it is the imagination that creates the connections between two seemingly different things (Artist’s Credo).
B. The movement is all about the private world of the mind or your imagination. The paintings by Kush are full of imagination, color and creativity.
C. The color choices in the piece are the analogous colors yellow, green, blue and all the intermediate colors in between. Kush also uses neutral shades of brown near the bottom.
D. A sonata is a composition for an instrumental soloist and the name of this painting is African Sonata. So this fits because there is a landscape including elephants with trombones as their heads. Only Kush will really know the story behind the picture though.

On my honor, I have been academically honest.
